That\u2019s<br \/>\nwhy going for a walk at the end of a stressful day makes us feel better and<br \/>\nhappier. <\/p>\n<p>But, just how many minutes of physical activity does it take to improve mental wellbeing? Are we <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">talking<\/g> about an hour or two? <\/p>\n<p>Turns out, scientists have been asking this question and have found the answer! <\/p>\n<p><strong>Some Activity is<br \/>\nBetter Than No Activity!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Department of Health and Human Services recommends at<br \/>\nleast 30 minutes of exercise, five days a week for good health. However, a<br \/>\nlittle bit of physical activity is better than no activity. <\/p>\n<p><em>As<\/em><em> little as 10 to 15 minutes<\/em> of aerobic exercise<br \/>\ncan improve your mood, especially if you opt for vigorous activities like<br \/>\nrunning or cycling. It\u2019s better to commit to a few minutes of exercise everyday<br \/>\nthan to skip several days until you\u2019re able to spare 30 minutes for a full<br \/>\nworkout. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Cardio Vs. Strength<br \/>\nTraining<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your primary goal for working out is to improve your mood, which one is better: cardio or strength training? Well, the jury is in and strength training is a better picker-upper than cardio. So if you only have 10 minutes for a mood-boosting workout, you\u2019re better off pumping iron than pounding the pavement. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not saying that cardio doesn\u2019t boost mood. It\u2019s just<br \/>\nthat the benefits of cardio, with regards to mood, are less consistent than<br \/>\nstrength training. Scientists think this might be because strength training<br \/>\nincreases a substance called BDNF, which causes beneficial changes in the brain.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting Over the<br \/>\nMental Obstacles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Motivating ourselves to work out when we\u2019re in a good mood is hard enough! But it seems twice as hard when we\u2019re stressed or in a bad mood. It\u2019s pretty clear that simply knowing the <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">mood boosting<\/g> effects of exercise isn\u2019t always enough motivation to take that first step. <\/p>\n<p>One way to get over this hump is to schedule your workout for<br \/>\nthe time of day when your energy is highest, which is likeliest in the morning,<br \/>\nor at lunch before the afternoon slump. Scheduling your work out for the<br \/>\nevening creates too many opportunities for other priorities and people to infringe<br \/>\non your time.
