Knowing how your brain works can actually help you build brain power<br \/>\nand delay age-related dementia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How<br \/>\nNeuroplasticity Works<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The brain is made of a huge number of neurons that<br \/>\nwork together to perform both simple and complex tasks. These neurons are<br \/>\nconnected by a unique pattern of pathways. <\/p>\n<p>When your brain needs to perform a task such<br \/>\nas recall the lyrics to your favorite song, the neural connections fire up in a<br \/>\nspecific sequence until the task is done.<\/p>\n<p>Neuroplasticity occurs when your brain<br \/>\nmodifies existing neural networks and creates new ones. It deletes neural<br \/>\nconnections that you haven\u2019t used in a while and strengthens the necessary<br \/>\nones. This process happens continuously throughout your life as you learn and<br \/>\nmemorize new things.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Build Brain Power<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep learning new things<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nothing keeps your brain cells active like<br \/>\nlearning new things. Studies show that enrolling in an art or dance class can<br \/>\nimprove your attention, memory and promote neuroplasticity and growth. <\/p>\n<p>Similarly, learning a new language activates<br \/>\nthe hippocampus, which is the memory center of the brain,<br \/>\nand actually makes your brain bigger. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Exercise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The benefits of working out go far beyond physical fitness. Regular exercise generates new neural connections in the hippocampus, and improves your thinking and memory. <\/p>\n<p>This is because exercise improves blood,<br \/>\noxygen and nutrient supply to the brain and stimulates the production of a<br \/>\nhormone that promotes the formation of new neurons and connections. It\u2019s why<br \/>\ndoctors prescribe physical exercises to ward off mental decline in patients<br \/>\nover 50. <\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to work out for months before<br \/>\nyou begin seeing changes in your memory and your brain&#8217;s ability to plan and<br \/>\norganize.
